Lifelong Learning Series Part 2
Blog 7: Lifelong Learning Series Part 2
In my previous blog I went over a few tips to stay curious and be
a lifelong learner. To recap, some of the things that have worked for me
include: browsing my local library website and LinkedIn Learning, joining a
leadership committee and asking questions that create great conversations, and
optimizing my social media. In this blog I am going to give a few more ideas to
spark your curiosity since there is always so much to learn. Some of the ideas
I have for part two include: listen to a podcast, attend a networking event and
learn from peers in your industry, and watch some videos on YouTube.
Listen to a
podcast
Podcasts are great for learning when driving, wanting to exercise,
cooking, or sometimes relaxing. A lot of organizations are putting out great
content that help people learn from industry experts without having to go to
conferences or seminars. Some of the podcasts that I have recently learned a
lot from are: Speaking of Health Law from the American Health Law
Association, ACHE of GA Healthcare Leadership, and ACHE’s Healthcare
Leadership Podcast. Currently I am taking a legal environment of healthcare
class for my master’s program and every episode of Speaking of Health Law
has been pertinent and applicable. The podcast does a great job of tying legal
hot topics to current industry trends. The ACHE of GA Healthcare Leadership
podcast has been a great listen since it features some of the local leaders
here in Atlanta. The conversations are insightful and applicable to the Atlanta
market. The national ACHE Healthcare Leadership Podcast has also been a
great, easy way for me to get new perspectives on leadership and different ways
to approach a situation. They sometimes also highlight their future speakers at
the ACHE conference in Chicago! One of the speakers from last year that helped
shape my perspectives is Amy Webb and she talked about the future of healthcare
and what it could look like in the next 10 to 20 years based on the progress of
current technologies.
Attend a
networking event and learn from peers in your industry
I’ve been a member of ACHE and ACHE of GA for over a year now and
I have left every lunch and learn with a fresh new perspective and an easy way
of learning from others’ experiences. The panel discussions feature industry
leaders that discuss hot topics and explain them in a way that makes sense. ACHE
of GA allows the time and opportunity to network with others both at the lunch
and learns and at separate networking events. Casually talking to people
sitting at my table, I will learn about someone else’s experiences, the
challenges they have been facing or opportunities they have had, and their viewpoints
about it. There is such a great, friendly culture of professionals who want to help
each other learn. I imagine that other professional organizations and
networking events have a similar experience.
Watch videos on
Youtube
This might sound too easy, but the reason I suggest to watch
Youtube videos is the Youtube algorithms. In my last blog I discussed how
Instagram algorithms have helped me learn. Youtube’s algorithms are even better.
When you start watching a video about a topic that is important to you, Youtube
will suggest similar videos that give a different or added perspective. I used this
to my advantage when I was doing research early on for a project for my
Operations class. I had a couple extra weeks to turn in my presentation, so early
on I started watching a couple videos. It was such an easy way to start the
process. Then Youtube worked its magic and over the next couple weeks I was
able to solidify my approach by watching videos it suggested for me. Then I was
able to dig deeper and do the work required and present my finished product with
a diverse set of concepts.
